CAIL Fellow Ian G. Williams first published “Thoughts on Situating AI Literacy” on the GC Digital Fellows’ blog, Tagging The Tower, in February 2026. He revisits it here, with a note on how it relates to his work with the CUNY AI Lab.
This blog post, written in February 2026, reflected on my participation in an invited workshop organized by Data & Society Research Institute, which followed the public release of Anuli Akanegbu’s research report, “(404) Job Not Found: The AI Literacy Trap At Work.” My piece was published right around when the CAIL Fellows were getting started, so it pre-dates my participation in the workshops and beta-testing of the CAIL infrastructure and tools (in retrospect, it would have been interesting to do something like a pre-test/post-test of a measurement to gauge knowledge and attitude towards AI; perhaps that is something for a future expansion of CAIL). In the blog post, originally published on the GC Digital Fellows’ blog, I wrote about how I have been thinking, reading, and writing about the changing dimensions of digital literacy for some time now, and how that is shifting in this era of widespread AI diffusion, where AI is redefining capabilities, and messaging about becoming “AI-ready” is increasingly prolific throughout society. I particularly enjoy Daniel Greene’s writings on The Access Doctrine and was pleased to see Akanegbu building upon his work for the AI era, making a valuable contribution to the scholarship on AI literacy that centers the structural inequalities and social justice perspectives on the digital divide.
